Kunstmuseen Krefeld — Ausstellung Force Christian Falsnaes

Branding
Strategy

Creation of an accompanying publication on the occasion of the exhibition Force at the Kunstmuseen Krefeld / Kaiser Wilhelm Museum in summer 2018.

Strategy: The task was to present the work of performance artist Christian Falsnaes in a book. The Danish artist strongly involves his audience in his performances and challenges them with confrontation. This was to be reflected in the concept and design, creating a thematic link between the artist's work and the book.

Solution: The layout uses mirroring: sometimes only the layout is mirrored, sometimes also the content - this causes irritation and challenges the reader. In this way, experiences from the exhibition were integrated into the catalog and made perceptible. Fiting with the exhibition, the aim was also to design a book in which the reader has to “work out” the content. The title Force was also picked up in the color scheme: Red and black as two strong, aggressive colors each have their own beginning through an independent cover and run towards each other until the middle, the picture section, where they meet. This form of presentation avoids treating one language as secondary, but still creates a contrast between the two colors and languages, which only meet in the middle of the book - in the picture section. The flip cover allows both languages to be perceived as the primary language.

We were awarded the “Certificate of Typographic Excellence” by the Type Directors Club for our work on the Force project.
